As the Business Development Manager responsible for creating the business plan
for your company, it can be very challenging to gain a perspective of
opportunities over the several years; and from that, determine the specific
opportunities to pursue.
This week we are going to look at the "Other Management Consulting Services"
industry, as represented under NAICS 541618. To understand this NAICS code
better, epipeline has asked the following questions:
NAICS 541690 is used when the contract requires management consulting services.
Administrative and general management consulting (found under NAICS 541611);
human resources consulting (NAICS 541612); marketing consulting (NAICS 541613);
or process, physical distribution, and logistics consulting (NAICS 541614). But
this NAICS does include firms that provide telecommunications or utilities
management consulting services.
This NAICS was previously represented by Standard Industrial Classification
(SIC) code 8748 as it pertained to utilities management consulting services and
telecommunications management consulting services. The small business size
standard for this NAICS is $6,000,000.
Total reported spending under NAICS 541618 in FY03 was over $650M. FY04 saw an
increase in spending, to over $900M (source: epipeline's FPDS information,
covering fiscal years 2003 and 2004).
Who issues the contracts?

almost $420 Million in contract spending during fiscal years 2003 and 2004. This
equated to a 27% market share. The Unites States Navy, the Agency for
International Development (AID, aka USAID), the United States Air Force, and the
Department of Defense, round out the top five. These five departments comprise

rank at # 20. While both companies are "CACI," they are doing business under
those unique names, as reported to the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS).
There was significant shuffling from FY03 to FY04, though seven companies
ranking in the top 20 in FY03 are on the list as well as 16 from FY04.
